The Protestant Reformation was a huge event that happened to the church. This divided tge western church into Catholic and Protestant groups. This lead to the Christian humanism. These peopel believed that some external events, such as fasting, were not very i portant. Later the popes failed to meet the church's needs. They were more interested with politics rather than spiritual means, Some popes used their church to give them more wealth. Some popes werent able to give advice to people who asked how to save their souls. There was one monk that stood up to the church. His name was Martin Luther. He started with the 95 theses which was an attack on the church.
The 95 theses started in1517. This really upseted Pope Leo X. Leo said that they distroyed the real meaning of the gospel. Luther continued to emphasize his new doctrine of salvation. He said that it was faith that you need, not good works. Later the church excommunicated Luther on 1521. Charles V tried to change Luther's beliefs, but Luther refused. Luther was then made an outlaw by the Edict of Worms. He then went into hiding. Luther later gained the support of the German rulers. They then quickly took over the Catholic Churches in their territories. Later Lutheranism became the first Protestant faith.

The Zwinglian Reformation was an important of the spread of Protestantism. Ulrich Zwingli was a priest in Zurich began to introduce religious reforms in Switzerland. In October 1531 protestant and Catholic states began to fight. Teir leader was killed on the battlefield, and his power went to Calvin. He stood very close to Luther and leieved in the same things. Later calvin started to believe hat god already decided who would go to heaven and who wouldn't. Later this replaced Lutheranism.
